The Edinburgh International Festival Standard Life Opening Event: Bloom The Edinburgh International Festival was established in 1947 in the aftermath of the Second World War to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’. 70 years later, Edinburgh has bloomed magnificently as the world’s Festival City, and its impact has pollinated cities across the globe, propagating new festivals throughout Europe, America and Asia. To celebrate this special anniversary, multi award-winning 59 Productions will create an epic outdoor spectacle – transforming St Andrew Square into a magical night garden through light and sound installations and large-scale projection. Stroll around the Square as the buildings burst into life – immersing you in a fast moving world of colour, texture and sound. Neil Hanna Photography www.neilhannaphotography.co.uk 07702 246823

PIC BY GEOFF ROBINSON PHOTOGRAPHY 07976 880732. Picture shows a girl relaxing on a punt on the River Cam in Cambridge. It was announced today that new safety measures are to be put in place and people will no longer be able to put their feet over the side of the boat. PUNT chauffeurs on the River Cam in Cambridge must now give passengers an airline style SAFETY briefing - even though the punts travel at just TWO MILES an hour. Tourists are complaining that new stringent "over-the-top" punting guidelines have "ruined" the relaxing pastime and become a "health and safety" nightmare. Under the new code of practice, approved by the Conservators of the River Cam today (Tues), visitors can no longer lounge in a punt, but must keep their arms and legs inside at all times. They are not allowed to listen to loud music whilst punting and must be at least 14 before taking control of the vessel. Five big health and safety stickers will also be placed in punts to make sure people keep to the right of the river and do not overcrowd the boats. "I love punting with my family, but these over-the-top health and safety rules have ruined it," said Peter Williams, from Cambridge. SEE COPY CATCHLINE PUNTS "airline" SAFETY briefing

11/12/2014. Sinjar Mountains, Iraq. A Yazidi fighter holds his hat on to keep it from blowing off in the downdraft created by an Iraqi Air Force Mi-171E Hip helicopter during a mission to drop supplies and evacuate families on the top of Mount Sinjar. Although a well publicised exodus of Yazidi refugees took place from Mount Sinjar in August 2014 many still remain on top of the 75 km long ridge-line, with estimates varying from 2000-8000 people, after a corridor kept open by Syrian-Kurdish YPG fighters collapsed during an Islamic State offensive. The mountain is now surrounded on all sides with winter closing in, the only chance of escape or supply being by Iraqi Air Force helicopters.
