PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN - AUGUST 28: Migrant Samuel Deng, 21 from South Sudan poses for a portrait at the Red Cross aid centre in Franciscans TOR La
Porciúncula Catholic Church on August, 28, 2025 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Samuel fled South Sudan two years ago during the ongoing civil war and death threats towards family and his tribe (Dinka tribe) as they run a cattle business. Since fleeing Northen Africa (Algeria) to cross to the Balearic islands, he spent seven days at sea, two of those in the water where he has sustained friction burns from the life jacket and intense salt water burns too after the boat lost power. Having swam for rescue, Samuel has since lost two friends at sea and does not know where they are now. His goals are to settle in the United Kingdom where he has plans of enrolling into education. Arrivals to the Balearic Islands from Algeria are up 170% in 2025, with boats taking 40+ hours to reach Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. While EU entries fall overall, the islands face record landings, overcrowded shelters and growing calls for Frontex support.

LONDON, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 09: Members of the British Armed Forces have an informal moment before leading the parade on November 09, 2024 in London, England. The Lord Mayor's Show is the world's oldest, longest and least-rehearsed civic procession. It dates back to the early 13th century when King John granted the City of London the right to appoint its own mayor. He required that each newly-elected Mayor should come upriver to distant Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown, and the Mayors have been making that journey for over 800 years. Around them grew up a noisy, colourful, joyous procession that over the centuries became known as the Lord Mayor's Show.
