England, UK .1.8. 2005. London. Brian Haw, Parliament Square. First arrests under the exclusion order for the area around Parliament introduced by the government from today 1st August under the Serious and Organised Crime and Police Act which grants the home secretary the power to ban unauthorised protests within a half-mile radius of Parliament . Demonstrators , many wearing black gags, protested against the zone as a serious attack on civil liberties . This exclusion zone prohibits demonstrations, even one-person demonstrations, unless the police expressly permit them. Failure to comply can lead to arrest. The zone covers a very wide area around Parliament as far as the London Eye, Charing Cross embankment and up to (although not including) Trafalgar Square . The demonstrators were joined by Brian Haw, who won a legal battle to continue his anti-war vigil outside Parliament , and Lauren Booth, sister of Tony Blair's wife Cherie .
